MODES OF STUDY
The programmes are offered under any of the following modes.
Full Time – Students who are in full time attendance are required to take classes regularly in the semester (in not less than fourteen weeks and not more than sixteen weeks).
Part-time under this mode, a study may pursue one of the following patterns of study
(a) Institutional based programme (IBP) students take tuition during the holiday period i.e. April, August and December
(b) After hour classes – this mode is designed to cater for students who would like to take this course in the late afternoon/evening and weekends.

The Diploma and Post-graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership and Management provides knowledge and skills for individuals who wish to improve their understanding of leadership and management processes. This is professionally oriented course that emphasizes the management and leadership skills necessary in creating professional learning communities and facilitating and enhancing school improvement. The courses are therefore quite appropriate to individuals involved in educational management and related fields. Mode of Study IBP or Open, Distance learning.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Diploma in School Management
i. KCSE (C plain) or its equivalent or
ii. P1 certificate or certificate in related area
Diploma in Educational Leadership and Management
i. KCSE (C plain) or its equivalent or
ii. P1 or S1 or its equivalent with at least two years work experience
Post-graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership and Management
i. A holder of Bachelor of Education degree or its equivalent from
Kenyatta University or any recognized institution
ii. A holder of Bachelor of Arts/Science degree with a Post-graduate
Diploma in Education
iii. At least two years relevant experience after the first degree.

The Master of Education programme is offered through coursework, examination and thesis / project. The Master of Education programme in the four areas of specialization is designed for those in various positions of educational leadership and management, curriculum development and educational planning in the education sector and those who aspire for employment in those areas. The Masters degree is a professionally oriented degree that seeks to ground the students in
contemporary theories and skills in their areas of specialization and to enable them to apply and adapt them to contemporary issues and challenges in the education sector. The degree also seeks to give the students the ability to face the leadership challenges of the coming decades.
MASTERS OF EDUCATION
The Master of Education programme in the department is designed to offer opportunities for the professional improvement of those who are already engaged in a career related to education. The degree programme is designed to ground the students in theory and practice and also acquire research skills in any of the five areas of specialization; Educational Administration, Educational Planning, Economics of Education, Curriculum Studies and Research, Evaluation and Assessment.
Master of Education (Educational Administration)
The Master of Education with specialization in Educational Administration is a professionally oriented degree which is designed to provide the students with theory and best practices in educational administration. It also provides opportunities to the students to acquire research skills in educational administration. It is expected that the students should be able to develop the ability to apply knowledge skills and competencies acquired in mitigating leadership and management challenges in the education sector currently and in the future.
Masters of Education (Educational Planning)
The degree of Master of Education in Educational Planning aims at providing the students with relevant knowledge skills and understanding to work in educational planning, policy management and administration at various levels of the education sector.
Master of Education (Economics of Education)
This degree programme is tailored to satisfy the needs of practicing educationists to apply theory of economics in the analysis of contemporary educational issues. The programmes also assists the students acquire research skills requisition in understanding and analyzing educational policies and issues.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
i. A holder of Bachelor of Education Degree of at least Upper Second Class of Kenyatta University or equivalent from other recognized institutions of higher learning. Under special circumstances a candidate with 2nd class lower division will be considered especially those with exceptional performance (B+ and above) in specialized area of study, e.g. Educational Administration.
ii. A holder of Bachelors Degree with Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
iii. Relevant working experience of at least two years in related fields.

DOCTORAL PROGRAMMES
The PhD Programme in the department is offered through coursework, examination and thesis, in the following three areas;

The PhD programme is a three year full time (or four years part-time) programme. The aim of the programme is to produce graduates who have the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable them to assume roles as university faculty members, senior level educational managers and leaders, policy makers and researchers. The programme enables the students to develop critical thinking, effective communication, analytical and leadership skills that position them to meet education challenges with today’s best practices.
ADMISSION CRITERIA
A holder of a Master of Education degree of Kenyatta University or equivalent from a recognised Institution of higher learning.
Must have taken at least five (5) units at M.Ed level in the area of specialization
Must show ability to undertake academic research by having written a Thesis / Dissertation or Research Project
The department boasts of 40 members comprised of 5 professors, 18 Ph.D holders, 5 Non Ph.D holders, 8 Tutorial Fellows working on their doctorates and 4 non-teaching staff.
