Title of the course: Doctor of Philosophy in Health Education

Introduction

A PhD course in Health Education prepares individuals to acquire and develop knowledge, skills, and competency in the following six domain areas. The domains are needs assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of Health Education Programmes; teaching; research; grant writing; service; advocate for Health and the Health Education Profession

 

Purpose of the course

Health Education is a professional field that has expanded rapidly, primarily because of global health trends and national policies that have emphasized health promotion and disease prevention. Health education builds students' knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes about health. Health education teaches about physical, mental, emotional and social health. It motivates students to improve and maintain their health, prevent disease, and reduce risky behaviour. The mission of health education is to;

  1. Contribute to the knowledge and understanding of health behavior through scholarly research;
  2. Develop leaders who will contribute to the growth of the profession and the accomplishment of societal health goals;
  3. Address the health of the public through the preparation of specialists in health education who focus on the community as the setting for analysis, assessment, program planning, intervention, evaluation, and research.

Expected Learning Outcomes of the Course

The expected learning outcomes of the course will be to:

  1. Prepare the learner to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of health behaviour through scholarly research;
  2. Provide professional preparation of future health promotion specialists
  3. Develop leaders who will contribute to the growth of the profession and the accomplishment of societal health goals;
  4. Develop health education professionals.
  5. Motivate and enable individuals and groups to assume responsibility for their health by learning and adopting behaviour and supporting social policies that can promote and maintain health.
  6. Facilitate voluntary health-related behavioural and social change through the application of principles of behaviour and social sciences.

Course Duration

The course takes three to four years for a full-time student and four to six years for a part time student.
