Introduction
A course in Comparative and International Education for a Doctor of Philosophy degree programme at Kenyatta University provides students with research skills needed for understanding and critically evaluating policies, politics, histories, cultures and practices that shape education around the world.
Rationale
The Ph.D. degree programme in Comparative Education prepares students for research, scholarly inquiry, and advanced professional careers. With an emphasis on interdisciplinary, comparative, and cross-cultural inquiry, the programme is designed to create a strong foundation for studying education in the context of globalization, sustainable development, and social equity. Emphasis is given to research topics at the forefront of education and sustainable education theory and practice, including cross-cutting issues such as gender, culture, and poverty. The programme offers a combination of rigorous training in Comparative Education theory and research methods; key skills in policy analysis, monitoring and evaluation, and advocacy.
Course learning outcomes
By the end of the course the learners will be able to:
- The doctoral programme combines an emphasis on competence in comparative education theory and research methods, interdisciplinary approaches to the study of education phenomena in a variety of contexts, and opportunities for the development of students’ individual scholarly interests.
- Core courses provide a rigorous training in comparative education theory and research methods, including a sequence of courses on theory and theory building, as well as a combination of courses in qualitative and quantitative methods to familiarize students with advanced techniques for collecting and analyzing data on international, cross-cultural, and cross-national education phenomena and processes.
- The candidate will participate in an advanced field-based research practicum supervised by Kenyatta University programme faculty to enhance his/ her research skills.
Duration
Students registered for full time studies are expected to take 3 to 4 years while those pursuing through part time mode four to six years.
