INTRODUCTION
Sociology was the first social science discipline to develop a basic framework for the study of education, complementing long-established perspectives rooted in psychology and philosophy. The PhD course in Sociology of Education is designed to provide students with strong analytical and methodological training in a sociological approach to education-related questions and problems. The program prepares students to pursue careers in academia, university teaching, and research evaluation and education policy work in government agencies, youth and community service organizations.
Rationale
Sociology of Education’s relevance as a course for students in education at the PhD level lies in the fact that it is solidly theoretical and highly relevant to policy and practice in education. It prepares students to apply sociological analysis methods to issues they encounter in their careers in education and policy settings. The program provides training and hands-on experience in both quantitative and qualitative research methods. It aims to produce dynamic educators and professionals who are able to monitor and improve their practice as well as apply their practical knowledge, educational theories and research to resolve issues related to the field of education.
Expected Learning Outcomes of the Course
The expected learning outcomes of the course will be to:
- To prepare graduates of sociology of education for schools and colleges of education or for universities with specializations in the area of sociology as it applies to education.
- To prepare researchers that can conduct basic and applied research in various public and private institutions in order to advance both the practice of education and the study of sociology.
- Enable the graduates to acquire and develop knowledge, skills and competencies necessary for community service
- To train students to analyze educational problems and issues using the knowledge, concepts, ICT competency and research methods of sociology
- Demonstrate an expertise in an area of specialization in the sociology of education through the production of a high-quality PhD thesis.
- Acquire habits of critical thinking and systematic investigation to critique the role of education in society
Duration
Students registered for full time studies are expected to take 3 to 4 years while those pursuing through part time mode four to six years.
