 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in History of Education

The History of Education course gives a holistic picture of education, providing an understanding and interpretation of its foundations and developments, its continuity in the intellectual movements and institutions, a critical presentation and analysis of problems in education, its successes and failures, the contributors to its developments and the events that influence its developments. 

Rationale

This course is important for professional teachers, educational practitioners, managers in non-governmental organizations and especially philanthropic and community development workers.  The importance of this course lies in the fact that it helps learners appreciate the past educational developments so as to link them to the present, and to provides them the opportunity of knowing past educational mistakes so as to obtain a solid foundational training to plan and improve the present and future educational developments.  It informs educational processes and policy, the rise of mass schooling, higher education and historical perspectives on theory and practice, contemporary educational issues and debates. The study employs inductive, deductive and experiential learning methods requiring close study and interrogation of original records and relics of particular situations and events, and eyewitness accounts of the past as well as the review of secondary sources of data.
