A Centre of excellence in the Region for quality and effective teaching, learning and research in Educational Management, Educational Planning/policy, Economics of Education and Curriculum Studies. The department prides itself as leader in post-graduate education and training not only in the county but in the region.
The department therefore strives and is committed to providing quality education and training in its programmes, in tandem with the needs of the ever changing educational landscape, locally and globally.
The department is committed to excellence in teaching students to think critically, objectively and engage actively in issues pertaining to education in general and educational management and policy, educational planning, economics of education, curriculum studies or educational research, evaluation and assessment in particular.
Excellence in teaching students to pursue research with a view to advancing knowledge and understanding and, to address national and global issues and challenges pertaining to educational management and policy, educational planning, economics of education curriculum studies or educational research, evaluation and assessment.
Service to the public and humankind through generation, dissemination and application of knowledge from the perspective of educational management and policy, educational planning, economics of education curriculum studies or educational research, evaluation and assessment.

INCEPTION
The department emerged from the Department of Educational Foundations of the University of Nairobi under which Kenyatta University College was a constituent college. The parent department offered diploma and degree programmes in Educational Foundations, Administration and Curriculum and once the University College attained full university status in 1985, the existence of the Department of Educational Administration, Planning and Curriculum Studies of the University of Nairobi influenced the creation of a similar department in the new university.

FACULTY
The department began with a very modest number of members of teaching staff, in fact less than 10 in the 1970s. This number grew when the then University College gained full university status, after which the staff previously at the University of Nairobi moved over to boost the small number. This number has grown tremendously and the Department has 31 faculty members, 5 professors, and 26 PhD holders. Over 45% of members of staff have obtained their doctorates from the department. Other than teaching and supervision of students, the faculty is involved in consultancy and research in educational issues.
