Philosophy of the Programme
The philosophy of the programme is founded on need to develop the 21st Century skills needed in careers. These skills include critical thinking, problem-solving, analysis, digital literacy, collaboration and evaluating problems with the aim of finding solutions. The programme enables students to engage in educational analysis and critical thinking
Justification of the Need for the Programme
Any institution of higher learning must conform to international trends in relation to the program it develops. Institutional alignment to current practices allows us to be in tandem with international practice that seeks to ensure quality service delivery through offering programs that respond to the current needs in society. Kenyatta University (KU) is geared to ensuring that courses offered are designed to address the needs of an inclusive society. Consequently, Philosophy of Education has continued to evolve over the past decades with the recognition that education evolves over time and that the theoretical dispositions needed in understanding the practice of education cannot be overemphasized. This calls for regular and periodic review of our curriculum to incorporate those skills and competencies needed in the world today. Philosophy of education remains one of the powerful departments in the school of Education and lifelong learning whose contribution to teacher Education cannot be overemphasized and is indispensable in pursuance of the Sustainable Development Goals. It is therefore important that the University develops programmes that will help the Kenyan Government to come up with strategies that respond to both global and national goals of Education and Development. In tandem with the spirit of diversity and inclusion, as stipulated in Competency Based Education (CBE),Kenyatta University offers a Masters of Education degree in Educational Foundations.
Expected Learning Outcomes of the Programme
Upon completion of the Masters programmes in Philosophy of Education, the graduate will be able to:
PLO 1: Apply research approaches in educational undertakings
PLO 2 :Promote ethical foundations in educational settings
PLO 3: Apply Philosophical theories is solving educational problems
PLO 4: Critique educational policies and reforms
PLO 5: Develop and Prescribe philosophical theories in education.
PLO 6: Apply philosophical approach in addressing educational problems
The programme is offered through face-to-face
Entry requirements
- a) Students must satisfy the minimum entry requirements of Kenyatta University and School of Education.
- b) A Relevant Bachelor’s Degree with a Second Class, Upper Division for a Master’s programme in Philosophy of Education
c). A Relevant Bachelor’s Degree with a second Class, Lower Division with a Two years Relevant experience for a Master’s programme in Philosophy of Education
Regulation on credit transfers in the programme
- a) Kenyatta University rules and regulations on course exemptions and credit transfer shall apply. A candidate may be exempted from some course units subject to the following conditions: - Must have passed in similar course units at Masters level in the Kenyatta University or in institutions recognized by the Senate of the Kenyatta University.
- b) No candidate shall be exempted for more than one third of the total number of courses required in the degree program.
- c) Credit transfer/ exemption will be limited to first year units
- d) The student records will only be communicated between universities officially.
- e) Only courses with a grade B (plain) and above will be considered for Credit
Course Requirements
Students will be required to attend all lectures (100% class attendance).
Any student who misses 25% of the lecture hours without permission supported with authentic evidence will not be allowed to sit for the assessment.
Students are also expected to write and defend a proposal successfully at the department after year one of the study
At the end of course work, every student must either write:
i.Thesis and defend it before a board constituted at Graduate school or
- a project that assessed through graduate school
- b) Lecturers are responsible for course delivery and facilitation. The lecturer in each unit is expected to utilize a variety of teaching approaches including lectures, ICT, group discussions, practical activities. The lecturer is also expected to give Continuous Assessment Activities, set end of semester exams, moderate internally, invigilate, mark the exam question papers, moderate marks internally/externally, and enter student’s approved marks on the provided mark sheets online.
Duration and Structure of the Programme
- Duration of the Programme
The duration of the master’s degree programme shall be as follows:
- A full-time student shall be registered for a minimum of two (2) years and a maximum of three (3) years.
- A part-time student shall be registered for a minimum of three (3) years and a maximum of four (4) years.
- No student shall be registered as full-time for more than four years without completing the programme of study or submitting a thesis/project, as may be the case without the permission of Senate.
Structure of the Programme
The programme shall consist of:
Coursework, Examination and Thesis
Students opting for Coursework, Examination and Thesis shall take two (2) common units and eight (8) core units making a total of ten (10) minimum units. [The thesis shall be an equivalent to eight (8) units.]
Coursework, Examination and Project
Students opting for Coursework, Examination and Project shall take two (2) Common units, eight (8) Core units and four (4) Elective units, making a total of fourteen (14) minimum units. The project shall be equivalent to four (4) units.
