Title of the Proposed Programme

The title of the revised programme is Master of Education (Sociology of education and policy studies) 

Philosophy of the Programme

The programme’s philosophy is responsiveness to the needs of society in provision of knowledge, skills and values to all learners.

Justification of the Need for the Programme

Any institution of higher learning must conform to international trends in relation to the program it develops. Institutional alignment to current practices allows us to be in tandem with international practice that seeks to ensure quality service delivery through offering programs that respond to the current needs in society. Kenyatta University (KU) is geared to ensuring that courses offered are designed to address the needs of an inclusive society.  Consequently, Sociology of Education and Policy studies has continued to evolve over the past decades with the recognition that  education evolves over time and that the theoretical dispositions needed in understanding the practice of education cannot be overemphasized. This calls for regular and periodic review of our curriculum to incorporate those skills and competencies needed in the world today. Educational Foundations remains one of the powerful departments in the school of Education and lifelong learning whose contribution to teacher Education cannot be overemphasized and is indispensable in pursuance of the Sustainable Development Goals. It is therefore important that the University develops programmes that will help the Kenyan Government to come up with strategies that respond to both global and national goals of Education and Development. In tandem with the spirit of diversity and inclusion, as stipulated in Competency Based Education (CBE), Kenyatta University offers a Masters of Education degree in Sociology of Education and Policy studies.

Expected Learning Outcomes of the Programme

Upon completion of the Masters’ programme in Sociology of Education and Policy studies, the graduates will be able to:

PLO 1. Understand the ethical implications of sociological inquiry through ethical reasoning.

      PLO 2. Analyze the diversity of social experiences in education using sociological

Perspectives in relation to race, class, gender, age, sexual preference, religion, and nationality

PLO 3. Assess the merits and demerits of theoretical approaches to formulate empirically

Researchable questions about social issues and advocacy for positive social change

PLO 4. Apply a range of research strategies such as quantitative, qualitative and mixed approaches to particular research questions, theoretical orientations, and social contexts in everyday life

PLO 5. Evaluate complex educational issues from multiple perspectives and propose evidence-based solutions informed by sociological theory and research.

Mode of Delivery of the Programme

The programme is offered through face to face (full time, part-time), modular, open and distance, e-Learning, and blended modes of delivery.

ACADEMIC REGULATION OF THE PROPOSED PROGRAMME

Entry requirements

1. a) Students must satisfy the minimum entry requirements of Kenyatta University and School of Education.
2. b) A Relevant Bachelor’s Degree with a Second Class, Upper Division for a Master’s programme in Sociology of Education and Policy studies

c). A Relevant Bachelor’s Degree with a second Class, Lower Division with a Two years Relevant experience for a Master’s programme in Sociology of Education and Policy studies

Regulation on credit transfers in the programme

1. a) Kenyatta University rules and regulations on course exemptions and credit transfer shall apply. A candidate may be exempted from some course units subject to the following conditions: - Must have passed in similar course units at Masters level in the Kenyatta University or in institutions recognized by the Senate of the Kenyatta University.
2. b) No candidate shall be exempted for more than one third of the total number of courses required in the degree program.
3. c) Credit transfer/ exemption will be limited to first year units
4. d) The student records will only be communicated between universities officially.
5. e) Only courses with a grade B (plain) and above will be considered for Credit

Course Requirements

Students will be required to attend all lectures (100% class attendance).

Any student who misses 25% of the lecture hours without permission supported with authentic evidence will not be allowed to sit for the assessment.

Students are also expected to write and defend a proposal  successfully at the department after year one of the study

At the end of course work, every student must either write:

 i.Thesis and defend it before a board constituted at Graduate school or

1. a project that assessed through graduate school
2. Lecturers are responsible for course delivery and facilitation. The lecturer in each unit is expected to utilize a variety of teaching approaches including lectures, ICT, group discussions, practical activities. The lecturer is also expected to  give Ccontinuous Assessment Activities, set  end of semester exams, moderate internally, invigilate, mark the exam question papers, moderate marks internally/externally,  and enter student’s approved marks on the provided  mark sheets online .
3. Structure of the Programme

The programme shall consist of:

1. Coursework, Examination and Thesis

Students opting for Coursework, Examination and Thesis shall take two (2) common units, one (1) Department core unit, six (6) Course core units and one (1) elective unit making a total of ten (10) minimum units. The thesis shall be an equivalent to eight (8) units.

1. Coursework, Examination and Project

Students opting for Coursework, Examination and Project shall take two (2) Common units, one(1) Departmental core unit, seven (7) Course core units and four (4) Elective units, making a total of fourteen (14) minimum units. The project shall be equivalent to four (4) unit2.10.3: List of programme’s common courses, core courses & electives
